Fantastic Beach Club
4 star hotel review WarrenL, Singapore – August 2011
“ The best thing about the Hotel Tivoli Lagos was the beach club. It took us a couple of days before we strayed far from the hotel (the kids wanted to stay by the pool) but we eventually took the free hotel bus to the beach club and really enjoyed it – and even got to play a couple of sets of tennis with my wife. The kids loved the pool and the beach, the food and drink there was pretty good and reasonably priced, we managed to get some sun loungers without a struggle! By the end of the holiday we were queueing up for the shuttle bus every morning to make sure we got there early so we could spend the whole day there. This hotel is definitely going to be one of our regular holidays. ”

Affordable and Decent Quality
5 star hotel review BobAndRita, Spokane – June 2011
“ This is a late review: it’s been 2 months since we stayed at the Hotel Tivoli Lagos so I thought it would be interesting to express my thoughts looking back. My main impression was how thankful I am about not being ripped off – I hate that feeling of paying more than you should and there’s nothing you can do about it. So I was very pleased when I saw the restaurant and bar prices – the food and drink was very reasonable and certainly no more expensive than outside the hotel – and there were no “extras” that should have been free. It made you feel you could sit by the pool and order drinks and lunch and not feel like they were taking advantage of you, which has happened at a few hotels I have stayed in. And everything was pretty good quality too, so I would say 4-star hotel at 3-star prices! ”

The Perfect Routine
5 star hotel review Randi4566, Oslo – September 2010
“ Everyday we did the same thing! Nice breakfast, then take the first hotel bus (free!) to the nice beach club – swim, sunning, lunch, more swim, more sunning – back to hotel at 4 oclock and swim in pool to be clean, then relax and have a drink in the bar room before we go outside to the restaurant in Lagos. Perfect every day! C u next year Hotel Tivoli Lagos! Randi + Bjorn. ”

Good for City and Beach
4 star hotel review KandyGirl, Sri Lanka – May 2010
“ We originally decided on staying for a long weekend at the Hotel Tivoli Lagos as a city break, enjoying all the bars and restaurants which we saw were very close to this hotel. But we also found that there’s a city beach you can walk to which is very nice and of course Praia Meia beach, so our city break also turned into a beach break! We still enjoyed the bars and restaurants in the evenings however, and since we went in May one of the days was cloudy and windy so a bit chilly so we just wandered around town which was fun too. Next time we go we will probably hire a car and visit some other towns if it’s chilly. ”

Local Visitor Attractions

Lagos

Lagos Fortress Lagos is a compact city of 20,000 inhabitants where all the attractions are within easy walking distance. The main city beach Praia de Batata is very close by and is followed by a succession of secluded sandy coves to explore, or you can try the huge Praia Meia beach just across the marina where the Hotel Tivoli Lagos has a free shuttle bus to the Duna Beach Club.

The city centre is attractive with a lot of traditional architecture, and has an excellent selection of restaurants and bars favoured by locals and world travellers alike – try the local specialties chicken piri piri and salt cod (bacalhao). Other things to see and do include an early-morning visit to the harbour to watch the daily catch being landed, a wander round the the fish market, checking out the lovely views from Ponta da Piedade, hiring a kayak or taking a boat tour to the interesting sea caves and grottos, dolphin watching excursions.

Silves

Silves The lovely Medieval town of Silves is situated inland from Lagos on the River Arade, and historically served as the link between the coast and the hinterland. The Moorish Fortaleza castle dominates the town, from which you can enjoy spectacular views of the valley. The town itself has an appealing selection of cafes, shops and attractions including the impressive cathedral, a couple of museums, a morning river-front market (not Sundays) and a popular beer festival in August. The best way to visit Silves from the Hotel Tivoli Lagos is to hire a car or taxi – the trip should take only half an hour.

Atlantic Coast

The Lighthouse at Sagres For endless deserted beaches head west to the Atlantic coast, which has a laid-back atmosphere popular with surfers, wind surfers and kite surfers. Aim for Vila do Bispo – which has a wide selection of restaurants – and then simply carry on and stop at any beach you fancy, or head inland on the many hiking trails in the hills. Also worth a visit is Sagres and Cape St. Vincent – Europe’s most south-western point. All along this coast you’ll find cafes to eat and drink or shops to stock up on picnic supplies and bottled water. Two points of warning in this area: some beaches are clothing-optional, and especially out of season it can get very windy. The Atlantic Coast is about 40 minutes drive from the Hotel Tivoli Lagos.

More Beaches near Hotel Tivoli Lagos

For charming seafront towns with attractive beaches look no further than Salema, Burgau and Luz, all further west along the Algarve coast from the Hotel Tivoli Lagos. Each has lovely whitewashed houses, a few restaurants and cafes, but most of all fantastic beaches.

Portimao

If you’re missing the bright lights of a big city then Portimao – the second largest city in the Algarve – is just 30 km (20 miles) from Lagos. Portimao is a working fishing port and commercial centre so has more to offer than simply tourism, and you can enjoy the real Portugal. Visit the gypsy market, the best sardine restaurants in Portugal at the placa near the bridge, and the outstanding Praia da Rocha city beach. To reach Portimao from the Hotel Tivoli Lagos it is easiest to take one of the frequent buses or trains, or hire a taxi.
