Good for Cruise Transit
4 star hotel review HarriL, Helsinki – August 2011
“ We stayed at Max Hotel Livorno before taking the early ferry to Sardinia the next morning and it was a good decision. In summer they specially open the restaurant early at 6:30 so you have time to have a good breakfast, then you can take a taxi to the port (only takes 10 minutes) which the reception arranged for us the day before. One thing you must remember: you cannot walk into the port – you must take a car or bus. The rooms were clean and spacious, the air-conditioning worked (which is not always the case in Italy!) and restaurant was good too – though we only had a snack. ”

Brilliant Reception Staff
5 star hotel review BobAndRita, Spokane – June 2011
“ Firstly many, many thanks to the brilliant reception staff who went above and beyond the call of duty helping us with our itinerary touring Tuscany – they must have been sick at the sight of us! In particular they persuaded us to take the train to Cinque Terre rather than driving as the train station is right next door to the Max Hotel Livorno and that trip turned out to be the highlight of the holiday, whereas if we’d stuck to our original plan and driven it would have been a nightmare.
Our review: the Max Hotel Livorno is an excellent, clean, modern, well-run hotel well-deserving of its four stars. The only downside is that it’s not in the centre of town so you have to take a short taxi ride, but otoh if you’re main plan is to tour Tuscany then you don’t have to struggle out of the city centre every day and you can be on the motorway in 5 minutes. You can’t have it both ways! ”

Good for Business
4 star hotel review KarlInBerne, Switzerland – October 2010
“ We arranged a sales meeting here for our representatives in Tuscany and north-west Italy after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor and deciding that it was the easiest place for the team to get together. The Max Hotel Livorno is close to the motorway access and has on-site parking so we all managed to easily arrive on time, including one person who arrived by train from Florence to the train station which is very close to the hotel. All the facilities we agreed beforehand were on hand (especially lots of coffee!) and the meeting went very smoothly – even the wi-fi worked so everyone could check their email at lunchtime. Food was better that we usually get at conferences, but that’s probably because we eat in the restaurant instead of being catered separately. Overall the Max Hotel Livorno and its staff performed very efficiently and it’s very easy to get to – we’d definitely use it again. ”

Local Visitor Attractions

Livorno

Monument of the Four Moors The port city of Livorno (also known as Leghorn) is well known as the docking place of cruise ships whose passengers disembark for excursions to Pisa and Florence. However this industrious and historic city of approximately 160,000 inhabitants has its own character and there are many attractions to visit here. The Venezia Nuova (New Venice) district is populated with 17th century canals and bridges and is packed with winding streets, cafes and interesting shops. Other places worth visiting include the lovely seafront Terrazza Mascagni promenade, the Via Grande, Mercato Centrale and American Market for shopping, the 16th century Fortezza Vecchia (Old Fortress), the Quattro Mori Monument (Four Moors) in the Piazza del Padiglione. The city centre is only a five minute taxi ride from the Max Hotel Livorno.

North: Pisa, Lucca & Cinque Terre

The Leaning Tower of Pisa Pisa is less than half an hour’s drive from the Max Hotel Livorno and home to the world-famous Leaning Tower (Torre Pendente) which has now re-opened – buy a ticket on the day or online. Pisa has many other attractions such as the Duomo and Baptistery next to the leaning Tower and the whole area between here and the train station is full of interesting shops and restaurants.

Lucca is a less well known tourist destination in Tuscany but that makes it more enjoyable as it’s less crowded – and it’s only 40 minutes from the Max Hotel Livorno. Walk or cycle the city walls (3 miles) and enjoy the many fantastic restaurants serving irresistible Tuscan cuisine. If you have time carry on north to the stunning hill town of Barga.

The five charming villages of Cinque Terre cling onto the rugged coastline and are extremely popular with tourists. Avoid in the height of summer, and ditch the car and take the train instead.

East: Florence

Florence Ponte Vecchio The sheer quantity and quality of world-famous sights and attractions in Florence defies belief, which is why it one of the most popular destinations in Italy. Visit the stunning Uffizi Gallery, the Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio, the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens and the Santa Croce church – one day does not do them justice! Known as Firenze in Italian, the city is 120 km and 1 ½ hours drive from the Max Hotel Livorno.

South: Etruscan Riviera, San Gimignano & Siena

The coast south of the Max Hotel Livorno is known as the Etruscan Riviera and these 50 miles of blue flag beaches are popular with locals and visitors alike as they provide a typical Italian seaside atmosphere. You can enjoy traditional resorts and deserted beaches, fine seafood restaurants and superb ice-cream, snorkelling or simply sunbathing.

San Gimignano is famous for the 14 towers that dominate the town and can be seen for miles around. This hill town has many other attractions and is well worth a day trip to soak up the medieval atmosphere of cobbled streets and ancient piazzas, and enjoy the excellent cafes and restaurants. San Gimignano is about 1 ½ hours drive south-east from Max Hotel Livorno.

The well-preserved medieval town of Siena is located 180 km south-east (2 hours drive) from the Max Hotel Livorno and is crowned by the magnificent Piazza del Campo at its centre. Wander round the historic streets and squares, shops and cafes, visit the stunning Palazzo Pubblico, Fonte Gaia, Piazza del Duomo and Pinacoteca Nazionale museum, and if you’re here on July 2 and August 16 witness the extraordinary Palio horse race in the Piazza del Campo.
